ExxonMobil adopts Advanced Polymers Coatings' new TriFLEX™ technology for railcars

  • ExxonMobil is an early adopter of TriFLEX™ technology which utilizes ExxonMobil’s own Proxxima™ polyolefin thermoset resin system.
  • TriFLEX™ is an innovative coating combining superior anticorrosion and UV resistance in a single application.
  • Extended coating life brings up to 30% cost savings over the life of the rail car and increased operational efficiency over current epoxy exterior protection coatings by reducing the amount of time the car is out of service for recoating.

Advanced Polymer Coatings launched TriFLEXTM, a revolutionary exterior coating technology and ExxonMobil has already begun applying this innovative solution on its commercial railcars, with plans for extensive future use.

TriFLEXTM coating offers railcar owners a superior exterior coating solution that integrates the benefits of anticorrosion performance with long-term UV resistance, offering superior performance to traditional single-coat epoxy or polyurethane system.

Currently, many railcar owners rely on single-coat epoxy for exterior protection, which provides effective anticorrosion capabilities but falls short in UV resistance. Alternatively, TriFLEXTM coating ensures both advantages in one application, extending the expected coating life to 25 years compared to the 15 years typically achieved with a single-coat epoxy. Given a typical railcar’s life expectancy of 50 years, TriFLEXTM coating reduces the need for recoating, saving ~30% in costs and improving operational efficiency by avoiding downtime. For ExxonMobil, one of the largest independent shippers and owners of railcars in North America, these savings can be substantial.

Contributing to the standout performance of TriFLEXTM coating is ExxonMobil's ProxximaTM polyolefin thermoset resin systems, which is based on Nobel Prize-winning technology. ProxximaTM systems provide exceptional corrosion resistance, impact resistance, flexibility, and rapid return to service due to its exceptional dry time performance.

Additionally, with TriFLEXTM, a single-coat of thin film (6-8 mil DFT) helps lower both the material consumption and the overall carbon footprint by leveraging the ProxximaTM systems GHG advantage versus many traditional thermoset resins on a cradle-to-gate basis.

ExxonMobil’s adoption of TriFLEXTM coating underscores both companies' commitment to advancing coating solutions that enhance performance and longevity, while offering economic and operational benefits to railcar owners.
